Education programmes in Geo-Engineering

The Geo-Engineering Section has five Groups, each led by a professorial chair and with their own education programmes: Geomechanics, Foundation Engineering, Underground Space Technology, Geo-Environmental Engineering, and Engineering Geology.

Masters programme

Starting from 2011-2012, Applied Earth Sciences and Civil Engineering propose you a common MSc programme in Geo-engineering.

The programme will train you in the full range of disciplines relevant to Geo-engineering, and permit you to specialise in one particular aspect, geomechanics, geotechnical engineering, underground space technology or environmental engineering geology, depending on your own selection of courses and graduation project.

The programme is open to you, if you have a Civil Engineering or (Applied) Geology BSc degree. It will provide you with:

  • a high level of competence in the basics
  • a working knowledge of the specialist techniques required by industry
  • the ability to recognise ground engineering problems and know how to tackle them in order to mitigate the consequences
  • the faculty to adapt to new technologies and environmental situations

The programme consists of the following:

  • a core of compulsory geo-engineering courses (26 ects)
  • geo-engineering electives (34 ects)
  • some convergence courses to be taken at the expense of geo-engineering elective courses (16 ects, at the most)
  • a block of 20 ects to be filled in, for example, by free electives, an internship, a geo-engineering fieldwork or a multi-disciplinary project, according to the rules stipulated in the implementation regulation document
  • a 40 ects MSc graduation thesis

All courses are offered in English.

Bachelor programme

The Geo-Engineering Section hosts a number of courses in the two Bachelor (BSc) programmes offered by the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences: the BSc in Applied Earth Sciences and the BSc in Civil Engineering.
